Our Redevelopment Plans

Emergency Department: Investment - $6.5 million

The Department will triple in size. We are now managing close to 64,000 patient visits a year in facilities designed to accommodate 25,000 and we expect our annual volume to grow to 82,000 visits. The new facility will have dramatically expanded treatment areas with designated rooms for specific functions as well as separate examination/treatment areas for adults and children.

Some key pieces of needed equipment: Electronic White Board - $1,000,000, Physiologic Monitor - $20,000, Portable Anaesthesia Unit - $65,000, Vital Signs Monitor - $4,800, Trauma Stretcher - $5,600

The total cost to complete this renovation and expansion of our Emergency Room is $6.5 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $3.6 million to this important project. The remaining $2.9 million must be raised through private support.

Diagnostic Imaging Department: Investment - $10.4 million

In 1973 the department administered approximately 40,000 tests. This number is now nearing 120,000. The Diagnostic Imaging Department will virtually triple in size to accommodate the growing number of users. Many new pieces of diagnostic equipment

will be added such as ultrasound machines and a second CT scanner to increase diagnostic capabilities and reduce waiting lists and our first Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) that will allow for the people of Southwest York region to receive

this kind of sophisticated testing right here in our own community.

Some key pieces of needed equipment: CT Scan - $1,650,000, Portable X-Ray - $80,000, Digital Chest X-Ray - $400,000, Emergency Radiology – General X-Ray Room - $160,000, Automated Medication Dispenser - $9,000, Mammography System - $300,000

The total cost to complete the renovation and expansion of our Diagnostic Imaging Department is $10.4 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $2.2 million to this important project. The remaining $8.2 million must be raised through private support.

Critical Care Unit: Investment - $3.4 million

This intensive, complex, 24-hour care unit will double in size and will provide care for a greater number of critically ill patients in an area more appropriately designed for people in a fragile medical state, with waiting areas respectful of family needs for privacy.

Some key pieces of needed equipment: Central Monitoring System - $25,000, Adult Volume Ventilator - $25,000, Electrocardiograph - $16,000, Portable Transport Monitor - $20,000

The total cost to complete this renovation and expansion of our Critical Care Area is

$3.4 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $2.0 million to this important project. The remaining $1.4 million must be raised through private support.

Surgery: Investment: $12.3 Million

York Central Hospital surgeons perform more than 8,000 surgeries annually, which reflects 40% growth in our patient volume over just five years. The Surgery Department will go from having seven operating rooms, which were last renovated in the 70s, to having 10 brand new, state-of-the-art surgical suites.

Some key pieces of needed equipment: Crash Cart with Defibrillator - $19,000, Video Camera with Cart - $75,000, Ceiling Mounted Microscope - $140,000, Laparoflator - $15,000, Laparoscopy Unit - $75,000, Anaesthesia Unit - $120,000, Portable C-Arm - $160,000

The total cost to complete this renovation and expansion and to equip our Operating Rooms and Day Surgery Area is $12.3 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $6.8 million to this important project The remaining $5.5 million must be raised through private support.

Ambulatory Care Services: Investment - $3.4 million

Ambulatory Care Services cross over virtually every department in the Hospital. From Surgery to Dialysis, from Medicine to Woman and Child, our patients will have easier access to our outpatient clinics, services and programs. As well, we will be able to accommodate more patients in an updated and renovated environment.

Some key pieces of needed equipment: Portable C-Arm - $160,000, Endoscopic Ultrasound - $110,000, Ultrasound Unit - $65,000, Urology Laser - $45,000, Colonoscope - $30,000, Colposcopy Unit - $16,000, Electrocardiogram - $16,000

The total cost to complete the renovation and expansion of our Ambulatory Care Unit is $8.9 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $4.9 million to this important project. The remaining $4 million must be raised through private support.

Woman and Child Program: Investment – $8.0 million

Last year York Central Hospital delivered 2,400 babies.

To accommodate the growing number of users, Labour and Delivery (Birthing) Services are to be consolidated on the same floor as the Post Partum and Anti partum Services. Special (Neonatal Intensive) Care Nursery will be added to allow fragile newborns to remain at York Central Hospital close to the loving support of their families. Paediatric Services will now have a dedicated area for children, including a Family Support Area where parents can participate in the care of their sick or injured child.

Some key pieces of needed equipment: Crash Cart with Defibrillator - $15,000, Isolette Incubator - $25,000, Infant/Neonatal Ventilator - $25,000, Vital Signs Monitor with stand - $4,800, Infant Warmer - $18,000, Birthing Bed - $25,000, Fetal Monitor with cart - $19,000, Infant Security System - $110,000, Anaesthetic Machine - $70,000

The total cost to complete this renovation and expansion of our Woman and Child Area is $8.0 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $4.3 million to this important project. The remaining $3.7 million must be raised through private support.

York Regional Dialysis Program: Investment $1.5 million

This vital service will undergo a complete renovation at the York Central Hospital site and will see the addition of satellite suites located throughout the region. Our medical teams will be able to treat patients more efficiently and through the treatment of dialysis, patients will be able to extend their lives by many years. 

The cost to complete construction for Dialysis at York Central Hospital is $1.5 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $835,000 to this important project. The remaining $665,000 must be raised through private support.

Mental Health Services: Investment: $3.6 million

This service will be expanded and designed for greater accessibility, privacy and allow us to provide a higher level of care, on site. York Central Hospital currently has the capacity to admit patients on a voluntary basis only. The newly renovated facility will expand inpatient capacity form 12 to 25 beds, and allow for the care and treatment of patients who are admitted on an involuntary basis as well.

The total cost to complete this renovation and expansion of our Mental Health Services Area is $3.6 million. The Ministry of Health and Region of York have committed $2.5 million to this important project. The remaining $1.1 million must be raised through private support.
