Donors Help Make the Vision for the New Family Birthing Centre a Reality

It was a spectacular and long-awaited day for our expectant mothers, their families and our youngest patients. On April 23rd the new Family Birthing Centre was officially opened to the delight of many, including donors who directed their Campaign gifts to this area.

Donors were among the first to see the impact that their donations made on this important component of health care. Over the past eight years, the hospital has experienced a 50% increase in the number of births, welcoming over 2,400 babies in 2006. The new Centre can accommodate up to 3,200 births a year.

The Family Birthing Centre features a more family-friendly setting for labour and delivery within a modernized facility. The suites are designed to provide a home-like setting allowing mothers to go through labour, give birth, and recuperate in the calmest atmosphere possible. The Centre also includes two Operating Suites and Recovery Room for babies delivered by caesarean section. The neonatal and Resuscitation Room is fully equipped with all the equipment needed to provide essential care to babies who require extra help as soon as they are born.

York Central Hospital is now also the only community hospital in Ontario to have a full-time, on-site Maternal Fetal Medicine Service including a maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist, 3D/4D Ultrasound technology and a Pediatric Cardiologist with expertise in fetal echocardiography to care for high-risk pregnancies.

Donors to the Family Birthing Centre collectively provided over half a million dollars to help equip and furnish the Centre. Each of our Donors chose to support this particular unit for different reasons but all were uniformly pleased to see the tangible results. Whether the motivation was good corporate citizenship, giving back to the community or to honour a loved one, we thank them for their role in ensuring that our growing community receives the best birthing experience right here in our own community.

Foundation Provides Hospital With Record Grant! Thanks to our Generous Community

The Foundation was pleased to make a $5 million installment from the $35 million Share the Spirit of Care Campaign, in support of the hospital's expansion. This was made possible through the compilation of many gifts made by many generous donors. Greg Miklas, Foundation Board Chair stated “We have received incredible gifts from the Town of Richmond Hill, our hospital family, businesses, foundations and families.”

“Gifts from the community are critical if we are to continually improve the quality of care we provide for our patients. Rapid access to MRI scans, especially for cases determined to be urgent, is but one high profile example of this improved delivery of care. In addition, on a day-to-day basis, the availability of state-of-the-art bedside equipment and therapeutic services will dramatically add to the safety and comfort of patients during their stay in hospital,” said Chief of Staff Dr. Larry Grossman.
