The Department of Obstetrics/Gynaecology is very excited about recent
changes in 2002 which resulted in midwives joining the team at our hospital. Midwives provide comprehensive care to women throughout normal pregnancy, labour and birth, and women and their babies for six weeks following the birth. The introduction of midwives to our Department enables women to access this style of maternity care that emphasizes continuity of care, informed choice, and choice of birth place. Midwifery care is fully funded by the Ministry of Health and no referral is needed.
Over the past 8-10 years we have been purchasing
equipment and updating ourselves in less invasive procedures. As a
result, our hysterectomy rates remained level with no increases. At the same
time, our less invasive procedures, which serve as alternatives to hysterectomy,
rose in the area of day surgery. Thus, over the last 8-10 years we have been
serving, and continue to serve, a larger number of patients with less invasive
procedures. Since 2001, we have been able to offer uterine fibroid embolization to our patients
through our Diagnostic Imaging Department.
The Department of Obstetrics / Gynaecology is very
excited about the recent change granting of privileges to 8 midwives who started at the Hospital in 2002. The introduction of midwives to our Department
will enable our patients to make informed choices about their delivery
experiences. |
