What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a chronic disorder with a neurobiological base. It is characterized by a variety of symptoms that vary in degree of intensity. There are three areas of behaviour that may be affected:
- Problems with attention;
- Over-activity; and
- Impulse control.
The basic problem of children and adolescents with ADHD is their difficulty regulating and maintaining appropriate behaviour and focus. This can result in significant problems in functioning at home, at school or with peers. Symptoms generally persist through adolescence and often into adulthood.

A child or adolescent with ADHD may display some or all of the following behaviours:
- failure to pay close attention to detail;

- often disrupts and bothers others;
- is moody;
- gets upset and annoyed quickly; and
- immature social skills.
