Who We Serve:
In order to be eligible for respite care, the following conditions must be met:

  • The applicant's caregiver requires temporary relief from his/her caregiving duties.
  • The applicant will be returning to their home in the community within specified period of time.
  • If the applicant is not returning to his or her previous community living arrangements, respite care beds will not be used for these persons.
  • The applicant must meet criteria for complex continuing care as set out by MDS RUGS III categories.

To refer, or for further information call the Clinical Practice Leader at (905) 883-1212 ext. 3890 or fax (905) 883-2430.

The maximum booking time, at one time, is 21 days. The minimum booking time is 7 days, however some flexibility is possible depending on availability.

The applicant, or the person who applied on behalf of the applicant, must sign a Letter of Agreement.

Cost for Respite Care
Charges for persons utilizing respite care services take into account the fact that most people will continue to incur expenses related to a community dwelling as they are only admitted on a short-term basis. Patients will be charged an amount designed to cover a portion of their accommodation costs only.

As of January 1, 2002 the rate is $50.00 per day.

Applicant and/or family member will be charged the full amount for respite care service on the admission day. The payment can be made in the form of cash, cheque or credit card to the Client Liaison. To speak with the Client Liaison please call (905) 883-1212 ext. 3809.

Application cancellation without 72 hour notice will be charged the fee equivalent to 3 days of the Respite Care service.

Other Information

Medication
The patient or caregiver must provide the team with updated and correct medication list. The hospital will supply medication for the period of the stay. However, you may be asked to supply some medications that the hospital does not carry.
For other information regarding services, please see Continuing Care Program brochure.

Meal Times
Meals are provided in the dining room as well as the patient room, depending on the patient's condition. Most patients find the dining room experience to be an enjoyable opportunity to socialize.

Television and Telephone
Telephones are located at the patient bedside. Patients or caregivers are required to bring their own television sets and arrange for cable hook-up with Rogers Cable. Information about cable services and the telephone number to call for hook-up arrangements is available at the Communication Centre.
