Sexual Assault Care Services
Sexual assault is any form of sexual activity
with another person without her or his consent. It can include: kissing,
touching for a sexual purpose, or sexual intercourse.
Emergency Care Services
The Sexual Assault Care Team of specially trained
nurses and physicians can help anyone who has been sexually assaulted within the
previous 72 hours. The team is on call 24-hours a day.
Options for care include:
- physical examination and treatment of
injuries;
- emotional support;
- testing and treatment of sexually transmitted
infections;
- emergency contraceptive (morning after
pill);
- collection of evidence of assault; and
- link to community services.
Non-emergency Care Services
Emotional support and information are available
(by appointment) for youth and adults who have experienced a sexual assault.
Domestic Abuse Care Services
Domestic abuse is an act of power and control by
a person over his or her partner. It can include: slapping, name-calling,
put-downs, threats of harm and/or financial control of one's partner.
Emergency Care Services
The Domestic Abuse Care Team can help anyone who
has experienced a recent incident of abuse by a current or past boyfriend,
girlfriend or partner. A nurse is on call 24 hours a day.
Options for care include:
- treatment of physical injuries by Emergency
Department;
- emotional support;
- collection of evidence of assault;
- photography of injuries;
- risk assessment;
- safety planning; and
- link to community services.
Non-emergency Care Services
Emotional support, information and referrals to
community agencies are available (by appointment).
What will happen when you come to York Central
Hospital?
Emergency Care Services
- You will be treated in the Emergency
Department for physical injuries that require medical attention.
- A specially trained nurse from the domestic
abuse/sexual assault care team will be called in to discuss the options of
care with you.
- You will be taken to a quiet private area for
care, based on your individual needs.
- Evidence can be stored while you decide
whether or not to take legal action.
- You will be offered follow-up services.
Non-emergency Care Services
- You will have an appointment with a specially
trained nurse or counsellor sensitive to your needs.
Confidentiality will be respected. No fee is
charged for services. Language interpretation services are available.

In an emergency:
- Go directly to any Hospital Emergency
Department in York Region.
- Go to York Central Hospital for emergency care
and to access the domestic abuse/sexual assault care nurse on call 24 hours
a day, 7 days a week.
