Student Volunteer Program Information

Our 2008 Summer Program is now full and we are no longer able to accept applications. Our 2008 School Year Program is open to students, who have reached the age of 14 by September 2008 and includes those enrolled in Post Secondary School. If you would like to apply for a position, you must attend ONE of our Information Sessions.

Tuesday, August 26th 2008 from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., OR
Thursday, August 28th from 11 a.m. to 12-noon
.

Both sessions will be held at the following location:
M.L. McConaghy Seniors' Centre
10100 Yonge Street, Richmond Hill, (west side), just north of Major Mackenzie Drive

You do not need to bring anything other than a pen to take notes.  Please note that due to the overwhelming number of prospective volunteers, we will not distribute any applications after August 28th, 2008.

Are there any qualifications or requirements I must meet to become a volunteer?

 You must be:

  • 14 years of age or older

  • healthy (no evidence of active tuberculosis)

  • committed to complete a September to June placement or a July and August placement

  • Provide proof of age and identification
Does Volunteer and Community Resources keep a waiting list?

Yes, we keep all applications until the next Session i.e. applications received in May-June are kept until September; applications in September are kept until June. Because of many applications our office receives, we will phone only students selected for an interview.

When do students volunteer and for how long?

The commitment is one day a week, for 2-3 hours from September to June or July & August. Students volunteer at the same time each week - this provides consistency with staff, patients and visitors

What criteria are used to select students for interviews?

We interview students whose applications are legible, who are interested in areas where there are volunteer positions open, who are available at times we need volunteers and whose application indicates a sincere interest to volunteer in a hospital.

What criteria are used to select students for volunteer positions at the interviews?

We are looking for students who are mature, committed, friendly and professional with good interpersonal skills. We also look for students who can act independently within the boundaries of their position as outlined in their volunteer placement.

Please Note: If you are seeking a Co-op program opportunity, please see your guidance department.
